H.R.C. for the HRC
H-Rod is at it again. Kicking ass, taking names, smirking at the idea that marriage is hard. Oh Hill, we love you. The funniest things about this video are that a) it took this long for her to come out for marriage equality, and b) that anyone ever thought she wasn't.
I mean did anyone ever doubt that Madam Secretary of State, former First Lady, former Senator, all the time ass kicker, ever thought marriage equality was a bad idea other than in the context of winning an election? Really, someone thought that? I have always thought that Hill is a pragmatic, sharp politician who knows (most of the time) the fights worth taking on. From her time as First Lady when she and Bill got slapped around for picking some of the wrong battles I think she has been an incredibly calculating politician who knows what to do to win.
In another politician that might bug the crap out of me. Sure, I wish that when she was running for president Hillary had said "yeah I believe marriage should be available to gay and lesbian couples and and don't give a fuck who disagrees." But come on, that's not how you get elected.
Do I think that Barack Obama ever thought that civil unions were the same as marriage, or a good enough substitute? No, but he wanted to be president so he played the game. Sure, we wish our public figures would be braver than that, but if those half measures are what gets me President Obama over President McCain or President Romney then that's the price I am willing to pay.
Do I think Hillary is going to run for president in 2016? Who knows, but if she is, she's not on the fringes, we already have a sitting president who thinks marriage equality ought to be the law of the land. And if she's not running for anything ever again, then why the hell not come out and say what i think she's believed for a long time.
Either way, it's nice to see this H.R.C making a video for the HRC. The gays love you Hill, nice to know just how much you love us back (we always suspected as much).

I've always admired people who are idealists, but are also pragmatic enough to realise that the way you turn ideals into reality is to play the game that's going on at the table. It must be very easy to lose your ideals in the scramble for power (and I can think of countless British politicians for whom that is true). She has got very close to the top, and she has done it without losing her soul.
ReplyDeleteI liked her from the first time that she hoved into view for us in Britain, back when her husband became President. As both she and I have got older I found myself liking her even more (not least for the way she has been able to shrug off the avalanche of insulting, smirking, patronising shit which certain portions of the media seem determined to shovel at her). I must be honest and say that I was also won over by the fact that she claimed that she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary (not true, as it turns out, but what mattered was that she believed it).
Here in Britland we have had a female head of state for the last 60 years, a female Prime Minister, a female head of MI5, and a female head of MI6 (the latter was only in the Bond movies, but what the Hell...). The USA needs a female President, and they have got a ready made candidate here. It would be great if she could finally get to the position that she deserves after all of these years, and use it to make marriage equality a reality.
